    Northamptonshire Police Martial Arts Challenge

Working together with Northamptonshire Police, CMBBA was proud to take part in a special Martial Arts Challenge, giving members of the public an opportunity to see how practical self-defence skills can help people stay safe.

The event wasn’t about showing flashy martial arts demonstrations.

It was about demonstrating simple principles that anyone can understand.

Throughout the day we worked alongside police representatives to discuss personal safety, awareness and realistic responses to situations that many people may encounter in everyday life.

    Practical Skills for Everyday Situations

One of the demonstrations that attracted the most interest focused on something surprisingly common:

    The wrist grab.

Although it may seem like a relatively minor incident, a wrist grab is often someone’s first attempt to stop another person leaving or to exert control over them.

During the demonstration we explained why people’s natural reaction is often to pull directly backwards—and why that isn’t always the most effective response.

Instead, we discussed the importance of remaining calm, thinking clearly and creating an opportunity to move to safety.

    Self Defence Isn’t About Fighting

One of the key messages throughout the event was that effective self-protection isn’t about trying to defeat another person.

    It’s about:

    • recognising potential danger early
    • staying calm under pressure
    • creating space
    • escaping safely
    • seeking help when appropriate

These simple principles formed the basis of every demonstration we presented throughout the day.

    Working Together with Northamptonshire Police

Events like this provide an excellent opportunity to encourage conversations about personal safety within the community.

By working together with Northamptonshire Police, we were able to demonstrate that self-defence isn’t reserved for experienced martial artists.

Many practical safety principles can be understood and applied by almost anyone.

It was encouraging to see so many people asking questions, watching the demonstrations and taking an interest in learning more about protecting themselves and those around them.

    Learn the Complete Technique

During the demonstration we introduced some of the concepts from our Self Defence Mini Courses.

In our online training you’ll discover step-by-step instruction covering practical wrist-grab escapes, effective movement, creating distance and developing the confidence to react positively under pressure.

Designed for beginners, the lessons can be completed from home at your own pace and are ideal for anyone wanting to improve their personal safety.

    Building Safer Communities

At CMBBA we believe martial arts are about much more than kicking and punching.

    They build confidence.

    They improve awareness.

    They encourage respect.

And, perhaps most importantly, they help people make better decisions when faced with difficult situations.

We’re grateful to Northamptonshire Police for inviting us to be part of such a positive community event and look forward to supporting similar initiatives in the future.
